Ischemic Bowel Disease

Ischemic bowel disease arises when there is reduced intestinal blood supply, or vascular insufficiency, and usually occurs due to a partial or complete blockage of an artery feeding a portion of the intestine (small or large). Partial blockage can result in a variety of abdominal symptoms. Complete blockage usually results in bowel infarction, or death of a portion of the intestine. Bowel infarction is a surgical emergency.
