A certification by the Board of Nuclear Medicine. Practitioners are skilled in the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of radioactive materials. This doctor also has special knowledge of the biologic effects of radiation exposure, the principles of radiation safety, and the care of patients who have been exposed to ionizing radiation. The nuclear medicine specialist serves as a consultant to doctors, obtaining necessary information from patients by means of history and physical examination and selecting and carrying out appropriate diagnostic or therapeutic uses of radiation.
