Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or EGD is a procedure to diagnose problems of the food pipe, stomach and first part of the small intestine. EGD is performed by passing an endoscope (a miniature camera on a thin, flexible, lighted tube) into the food pipe. In addition to seeing what the problem is, the doctor can perform biopsies or collect fluids for testing.
