Emphysema is a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this condition, small air sacs (alveoli) in the lung along with the blood vessels within them become damaged or destroyed. This has a number of effects that result in wheezing, inability to fully exhale, and low levels of oxygen in the blood. The most common cause is cigarette smoke exposure.
