Arterial Thromboembolic Disease
Arterial thromboembolic disease occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms inside the wall of an artery. It can decrease or block blood flow. If part of the blood clot breaks off, it can be pumped into a smaller artery and block the smaller artery completely. The part of the blood clot that breaks off is called an embolus.
