"Do not go to this surgeon. Went for a consultation and instead of discussing options he told me do nothing and live with my hernia until I can’t handle the pain. Why would anyone wait to resolve an issue? Never asked if I had any concerns or questions just wanted to rush me out his office after making me wait 30 minutes past my scheduled appointment time. "

"In a pre-surgery consultation, Dr. Hooks asked about my husband's vaccination status. When my husband said he was not vaccinated and had no plans to become so, Hooks' demeanor changed. He said he didn't want to make our conversation political, but... and then said the vaccination won't work unless everyone takes it. I am certain Dr. Hooks did not know my husband had been working throughout much of the pandemic in the construction trade w/ people who were probably not vaccinated. If anyone had been exposed to COVID, it would have been him. Encouraging a shot for a disease for which my husband likely had immunity felt irresponsible and sloppy to me. His negative reaction toward my husband's reasonable and science-backed stance made me uncomfortable. His mention of politics was unsettling. We did not pursue surgery with him. It took me a year to decide to pay the additional office charge (beyond the co-payment) because I was so angry, and obviously by writing this review, I still am. If a ...COVID vax was a pre-requisite for surgery, we should have been advised of this prior to the appointment and before Dr. Hooks wasted our time and money. "Read more

"I went to NHRMC several years ago when I was living in North Carolina. I was admitted through the ER because of ruptured ulcers in my stomach that were bleeding that caused me to almost bleed out.
While I was in the ER I had the regrettable experience of meeting Dr W. Borden Hooks III. He seemed very charming and very educated on my health issue, however, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
He looked at my chart and my diagnostics and insisted that I have surgery that day, otherwise I was going to die that day. He informed me he planned to do a vagotomy, which in doing this he made a fatal mistake. I am not sure where he went wrong, but in a typical vagotomy, the surgeon would sever a portion of the nerve, that in my case would stop stomach acid production , however, he severed my entire nerve. There is not even a millimeter of my nerve still connected. In doing so he destroyed my future and has limited my lifespan in that one fatal error he made. Once he was done with the operation, ...through a series of events that I could not anticipate, I was forced to move back to my hometown, which was out of state.
Because I was fresh out of surgery, every gastroenterologist I went to see in my hometown was uncomfortable taking my case. Because of that, I was unable to prove that he committed medical malpractice until after the statute of limitations had run out, however, it was proven with 100% certainty that he absolutely did commit medical malpractice.
Him completely cutting my vagus nerve has caused me to develop gastroparesis, as well as several other medical conditions. If I could go back in time I would never consent to letting him operate on me. He destroyed my life I would bet he wouldn’t even remember me. He actually did the wrong surgery altogether. He did a Bill Roth II, which is a gastric bypass surgery. At the time I weighed 78 lbs. Far too small for a gastric bypass. Before you commit to a surgeon, be sure to do a background check. Believe me I have learned my lesson. All doctors are checked out by me thoroughly before I use them now. It was the worst lesson I have ever had to learn. "Read more
