OVERVIEW

A message from Sunil K. Sharma, MD, Director of New Life Bariatrics: Obesity is more than an inconvenience for individuals; it is a struggle for life. It is either a struggle for life in the direst sense because of the many medical problems it causes or is associated with, or it is a struggle for life and the quality that is often lacking because of the stigma of obesity. For many it is both. I have spent the majority of my professional surgical career focusing on obesity and helping patients find their own way to a new and more fulfilling self. Surgery is not always the answer and for most it is a last resort to their lifelong battle with obesity. I believe in making sure that individuals are well informed and fully participate in the decision making process when surgery is involved. Patients have non-surgery options for weight loss and they should consider them all before any final decision to have surgery. I am of the opinion that it is my job is to show them the clinical efficacy of surgery, how surgery is a tool for them to lose weight and provide all patients’ support in follow up care to ensure that they manage and maintain a healthy weight throughout their life. Surgery is not the easy way out. Many patients tell me that a loved one or friend believes that 'they took the easy way out'. Surgery is far from that. You will work as hard with surgery as with any other diet or weight loss program you have previously undertaken. The difference for most is that the tool we provide is the jumpstart to success that is often missing in other sustained weight loss programs. You will be as successful as you allow yourself to be. As you begin this journey to a healthier and newer you, I would be honored to be a part of it. Sincerely, Sunil K. Sharma, MD, FACS

"I had an open gastric bypass in 2010 with a different surgeon. I went to Dr Sharma in October 2019, because I had been having a lot of GI issues for the past 2 years. My doctors had been unable to diagnose or treat the symptoms. I had excruciating pain and vomiting everytime I ate. After Dr Sharma did an endoscopy, he was able to diagnose the problem and offered to do the surgery even though we weren't going to know how bad it was until he got in there. I went in for my surgery in November. The surgery went really well. I had a feeding tube put in to aid in nutrition while I was healing. I had some complications with the feeding tube after I was discharged. I was admitted again and Dr Sharma went right in to fix the problem. He was wonderful with my wife and mom. He checked on me every single day, sometimes up to 5 times a day the entire time I was in the hospital. He called my nurses every couple hours to check my status. I owe so much to him. Now I'm able to eat without pain or vomiting ...
and I've gained weight and muscle. I feel sturdier than I have in years. He saved my life. Not only is he extremely diligent in his duties as a surgeon, but he's also so very sweet and funny. I love seeing him and although I'm glad to be out of the hospital, I miss seeing him everyday. He's an extraordinary person. "

"From horrible heartburn tied with acid reflux to diagnosis of GERD and determination of root cause being Hiatal Hernia and ultimately laparoscopic surgery that addressed everything. He kept a pulse as well post the procedure to ensure smooth recovery. Dr. Sharma was truly exceptional !!!"

"I am retired Navy and my primary care is at the Naval Hospital Jacksonville, family practice. I had completed many of the prerequisite items for bariatric surgery at the Naval Hospital surgery clinic, but due to a shortage of naval surgeons that perform these particular procedures, I was referred out in town. I selected Dr. Sharma at New Life Surgical Associates. Dr. Sharma is a highly skilled, brilliant robotics surgeon, who knows what he is doing. The staff and nurses at New Life Bariatric Surgical Associates are awesome, very helpful, and encouraging through my remaining process steps. I am thoroughly impressed with the professionalism of the entire office. Doctor Sharma scheduled me for an upper endoscopy at Acension St. Vincent’s Hospital in August 2019. Conveniently located, Acension St. Vincent’s is only a mile or so from New Life Surgical Associates. It was discovered during the upper endoscopy that I had a hiatal hernia. Dr. Sharma said he would repair the hiatal hernia, at ...
the same time he performed my requested Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. I was scheduled for the procedures in late September 2019. I went into surgery and when Dr. Sharma was performing the hernia repair, he found that the hernia was in much worse shape than expected. He repaired the hernia, but decided to wait and perform the bypass at a later date, due to the fact I would have been under anesthesia too long increasing my risk. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed, but he made the right decision to wait. Additionally, I had been diagnosed with a fatty liver back in 2018. Over the next few months I continued to heal from the hernia repair, and had monthly follow up appointments with Dr. Sharma at his office. I was required to continue to lose weight and try to shrink the liver during this time, (some of the visits went well with my weight loss goals and some, not so well). When Dr. Sharma performed my hiatal hernia repair, he had a more complete picture of how enlarged my liver and other organs were situated. During these follow up appointments Dr. Sharma and I discussed the pros and cons of Roux-en-Y vs. the Sleeve Gastrectomy procedures. Fast forward to January 2020, I was scheduled to have my procedure at Acension St. Vincents, Dr. Sharma and I agreed, that he would choose the best procedure once I was robotically opened up again. The procedure went very well and I ended up getting the Sleeve Gastrectomy due to this being a safer alternative because of the enlarged liver. As I write this review, I am post-operative going on three weeks, healing nicely, and I am very happy with the results I am already seeing. My recommendation to anyone considering weight loss surgery is to listen carefully to Dr. Sharma’s advice, remain flexible, positive, and do your part in the weight loss process. Sincerely, JF "

Data Transparency and Trust: Understanding WebMD Doctor Listings and Reviews

We know that finding the right doctor or provider is important to your health. That’s why we want to ensure you have confidence in the provider profiles and listings you see on WebMD Care. Our provider data is sourced from the physicians themselves as well as publicly available databases. Any doctor or provider who claims their profile by verifying themselves can update their information and provide additional data on their specialties, education, accepted insurances, conditions they treat, and procedures they perform.

All the physician and provider reviews on WebMD Care are provided by users just like you. Knowing these reviews provide insight into how other patients feel about a doctor, we maintain internal policies and protocols to ensure the quality and accuracy of all reviews. Providers are not able to remove or modify reviews on their own. Reviews can only be removed after an internal review by our customer service team.

We value your input and encourage you to reach out to our support team if you encounter any issues.
