Shamus R. Carr, MD, FACS, has a strong interest in minimally invasive approaches to thoracic diseases of the lung and esophagus. He performs both flexible and rigid bronchoscopy for tumors of the airway. He is the only surgeon in the greater Salt Lake area that routinely does video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomies (VATS) for early stage lung cancer. His research focus is clinical outcomes and prognostic markers in early stage lung cancer. For diseases of the esophagus, he uses endoscopic therapies for Barrett's esophagus and early stage esophageal cancer. He performs minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal cancer that does not respond to endoscopic esophageal preservation techniques. He also does surgery for complicated gastroesophageal reflux disease and hiatal hernias. He received a medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire. His residency in general surgery and a two-year translational research fellowship in thoracic surgery were completed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery specializing in thoracic surgical oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Additionally, he has served overseas with the U.S. Navy as a surgeon. Dr. Carr practices at both the University of Utah Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Institute.
