Dr. Harrell was born in Georgia and grew up in Arizona. After earning his undergraduate and medical degrees from The Johns Hopkins University, he returned to the South to complete an internship along with his residency in medicine and fellowship in rheumatology at Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. Harrell is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and maintains certification in the subspecialty of Rheumatology. Dr. Harrell has been providing care for rheumatology patients at Durham Rheumatology since 1985. He has been particularly active in clinical research for new treatments of arthritis, having been an investigator in numerous studies including clinical trials of most of the medications that have been approved for arthritis treatment over the past twenty years. Durham Rheumatology now operates as TOA Rheumatology where Dr. Harrell continues his practice and active clinical research program.
