OVERVIEW

Dr. Mary Procidano is a Board-Certified Clinical Psychologist with more than 30 years of experience providing psychotherapy to adults and adolescents, specializing in treating the effects of stress and trauma, chronic and serious illnesses, and loss and grief. She works with individuals, couples, and families. She uses empirically-supported treatment approaches, and her style is collaborative and supportive. " I received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University and am Board Certified in Clinical Psychology (American Board of Professional Psychology). I have been in private practice for over 30 years, specializing in treating the effects of stress and trauma, serious and chronic illnesses, and loss and bereavement. Until 2021 I also was a full-time member of Fordham University’s Psychology Department, providing clinical supervision to graduate students, and teaching a range of courses including Psychotherapy Theories, Personality Theories and Research, Psychopathology, and Psychology and Human Values. My recent research projects include examinations of resilient adjustment in the personal narratives of people with cancer and cancer survivors. I am an active member of the American Psychological Association, the Stress, Trauma, Anxiety, and Resilience Society, and the Westchester Psychological Association. "My scholarly/academic background gives me a somewhat unique opportunity to bring reflective practice – a synergy of clinical experience and engagement in clinically-relevant research–to each of my clinical encounters.Every person’s experiences and life story are unique, but certain life experiences tend to prompt people to want change, and thus to seek psychotherapy in order to:-cope more effectively with life circumstances as they are, or make a plan to change them-get freed from paralyzing emotions and move ahead with life-soothe physical discomfort and pain-stay focused and get things done-feel happy instead of miserable recalling fond memories-resolve misunderstandings with other people-make choices and decisions-discover insights and solutions. You can expect me to listen carefully as we look at your current situation and goals, identify your strengths, and realize how can these be called upon–and what you might change–to help you cope effectively and achieve the changes that you want.
