"I received horrible care from Dr. Smith in August of this year at union health in Terra Haute. I was alone since I was traveling for work and it became clear that I was starting to miscarry and nearly 12 weeks. I sought out care at the OB ER at Union Health and was seen by Dr. Smith. Within seconds of her entering the room, she told me that she sees a lot of women that are "whigging out over 1st trimester bleeding," that it is normal, and that they would probably discharge me swiftly. When I tried to describe the severity of my symptoms, she cut me off and said "we'll if the blood is brown or purple it's old and I don't care about that." It wasn't, but she didn't even let me state all of my symptoms. I knew what was happening, I was in a lot of pain, and she dismissed me. After an ultrasound confirmed that I was miscarrying, she confirmed the news, and dared to tell me that miscarriage was "merciful" since the baby likely had a significant defect. How dare she?
On top of this unprofessional ...and cold treatment, I did not even receive a standard of care. No labs were taken, the urine that they requested never even left the room, and I was given no options for medication if I wanted it. I was given no information on what to expect, what to be aware of, and when I finally asked what I should look out for regarding complications, she told me that I should come back if I thought I was "bleeding out."
This terrible advice was not only unprofessional, but dangerous, as I nearly didn't go to the hospital a few days later when I had concerning symptoms of lightheadedness and dizziness from significant loss of blood, because I thought it wasn't "significant enough."
Thankfully once I was back home in St. Louis, I received compassionate standard care and finally was listened to.
This is the first medical review I've ever written. I give people the benefit of the doubt. But I was vulnerable, alone, and losing a child that I wanted so dearly. I was not only miss treated, but not given a standard of care. No woman should be treated this way in such a vulnerable moment. "Read more
