Michael Fields, MD is a board certified OBGYN practicing gynecologic surgery and obstetrics in the Knoxville area for 20 years. He is originally from south Louisiana, but has considered Knoxville home for almost 30 years. He is a graduate of Bearden High School, Carson Newman College, and Quillen College of Medicine, and completed his residency training at the University of Tennessee. In addition to his practice of obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Fields has long been an advocate and pioneer in the field of robotic and computer assisted surgery and the benefits of this technique for minimally invasive gynecological surgery. He performed the first robotic laparoscopic hysterectomy in the region in August of 2006. He performed the first robotic assisted laser treatment of endometriosis in the nation, and utilized this new laser to perform the first robotic laser hysterectomy worldwide.Dr. Fields performed the first robotic assisted single-incision hysterectomy in the Southeast, coining the term ‘RASS’ for this new approach to minimally invasive surgery requiring only a small incision below the umbilicus. He also performed the first robotic laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy in the Southeast, a procedure for severe uterine and vaginal prolapse. To date, Dr. Fields has treated over 6,000 patients using the DaVinci robotic surgical system, and spends a portion of his time teaching robotic surgery to other surgeons. Dr. Fields is designated as a robotic ‘Epicenter’ surgeon, one of 20 in the nation with the distinction, denoting a center of excellence in his practice of robotic surgery to treat his patients and to teach advanced skills to other surgeons. Not only has he trained most of the gynecologists practicing robotic surgery in our region, he has also trained other surgeons and robotic surgery teams nationwide.Dr. Fields has served on numerous hospital and health related boards in our region, and was chosen as one of few consultants to the President’s national Health and Wellness for Women directive.Dr. Fields lives in Knoxville and spends most of his free time with his two children. He credits his parents, Larry and Sandra Fields, a retired Baptist minister and retired RN for much of his success. He is an avid outdoorsman and fly fisherman and also plays acoustic guitar at venues around the area.

"Dr. Feilds has changed my life and given me hope. Unfortunately, I have a history of severe endometriosis with several surgeries and torsion that ended with a hysterectomy. Most OBGYNs, won't do anything besides assist with hormones. I had terrible pain going on for months that include a hospital stay and 3 ER visits to be told I was fine. I finally met with a general surgeon, I begged just to look ..."Read more

"I came in for a second opinion. Dr. Fields took time to answer all my questions and I didn’t feel like he was rushed. He was able to speak to me about my situation and used research to back up why he thought I should do certain procedures. I was also able to get the diagnostic testing done the same day as the consultation. The whole staff was incredibly helpful and made me feel valued."

I refused to get sucked back into the large "female" groups because I knew there had to be so much better than just settling with them. I found Dr. Copas and I knew that I could find another one to replace ..."Read more
