If it wasn't for medicine, Dr. John Reefer might be a farmer. His love of fishing and the outdoors is one of the things that attracted him to Butler in the first place. Another is the sincere and honest nature of the people who live here.
Helping those people avoid or manage diabetes is a major reason why he stays.
A native of Pittsburgh, Dr. Reefer earned a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He did his internal medicine internship and residency at Presbyterian University Hospital.
He is board certified in internal medicine with special qualifications in geriatric medicine, with a focus on the treatment and management of diabetes. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Diabetes Association, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and a certified referee of the United States Soccer Federation.
He has been on the staff of Butler Memorial Hospital since 1981 and is a former chairman of the department of medicine, past president of the medical staff and currently a member of the hospital's board of directors.
