Radiation Oncology
OVERVIEW
Dr. Henry Lee is?the Clinical Director?of the Department of Radiation Oncology at NewYork Presbyterian -Lawrence Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Columbia University Medical Center. Prior to my current appointments to Columbia and NewYork Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia, I was an attending physician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (NYC) and White Plains Hospital (Westchester). I received my medical and research doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago through the NIH's combined MD, PhD scholarship program. I completed my radiation oncology residency and fellowship at MSKCC. Because of my clinical and academic research background, I have participated in the development of treatment guidelines that led to the establishment of the NCCN guidelines. I voluntarily contribute to the oncology community as a Cancer Liaison Physician for the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. With my active participation in numerous disease site tumor boards at NYP-LH and CUMC, I am helping Columbia and NYP to establish teams of specialists to bring multidisciplinary oncology care to our region. My early laboratory and clinical research focused on the use of stem cell, molecular biological, micro-neurosurgical, and immunological techniques to understand diseases of the brain. The findings led to numerous medical advances including the discovery that adult neurons can be induced to divide, remapping of fundamental neural pathways, and the creation of human gene therapy vectors for treating brain tumors. My later research focused on developing new radiation oncology technologies that have become the standard-of-care for many types of cancer. One series of studies generated the original proof-in-principal data for using intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to treat breast cancer, head & neck cancer, rectal cancer, and brain tumors. I created the body stereotactic radiosurgery program at MSKCC and led their brain radiosurgery program with my surgical and physics colleagues. I have held leadership roles in disease site committees including breast, prostate, head & neck cancer, lung cancers and melanoma. My work has been highlighted at a number of international meetings and peer-reviewed medical journals including the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics.
