Dr. Ferheen Syed Shamim, MD

Dr. Ferheen Shamim, MD is a sports medicine physician with The Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey. Board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Shamim has expertise in: • Bumps and bruises • Concussion care • Electrodiagnostic testing • Hip, knee, ankle and foot conditions • Joint injection procedures using ultrasonic guidance • Overuse musculoskeletal injuries • Shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand conditions • Sprains and strains • Treatment with biologic therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) • Viscosupplementation Prior to her position at The Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey, Dr. Shamim served as a doctor for numerous triathlons, including the Carlsbad Ironman in 2015. Dr. Shamim completed her fellowship in sports medicine with a concentration in non-operative management of orthopedic conditions at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA. During her fellowship, she volunteered at Team-to-Win, a …charitable program which provides free comprehensive orthopedic care to student athletes at weekend clinics throughout football season. Dr. Shamim received her medical degree with a distinction in bioethics from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY and her bachelor's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. She completed residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Thomas Jefferson Medical Residency Program in Philadelphia, PA, during which time she was elected and served as Chief Resident in her final year. She completed an internship in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Shamim has a lifelong passion for sports which fueled her career in sports medicine. She enjoys helping high school, collegiate and recreational athletes of all ages get back to doing what they love, and believes that a carefully tailored rehabilitation program in conjunction with medication can conservatively manage many orthopedic conditions.
