Patients come to Dr. Assia Stepanian for her expertise, innovation, compassion, skill, and dedication to women’s gynecologic health. Patients ages 11, to over 100 years old, have found a home at Academia of Women’s Health. Beginning with a young woman’s first visit to the gynecologist, Dr. Stepanian provides a comfortable and welcoming environment in which she offers detail-oriented, preventative annual gynecologic visits, transvaginal ultrasound, hormone management, counsel and care for intimacy concerns, endometriosis and adenomyosis treatment, treatment of all benign gynecologic surgical conditions, reproductive planning, and infertility. She also specializes in office-based and out-patient-based hysteroscopic, vaginal, and laparoscopic minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. A board-certified gynecologist and certified, fellowship-trained minimally-invasive gynecologic surgeon, Dr.Stepanian’s education and career span the globe.
She grew up in Moscow, the daughter of two renowned physicians. She received her medical degree at the world-famous I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy and completed her OB GYN residency at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Center for Perinatology,Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Stepanian learned extensively from her mother,Professor Leila Adamyan, the developer of some of the most advanced techniques,classifications and scientific innovations used today in laparoscopic surgery and the management of endometriosis, adenomyosis, myoma and Mullerian Anomalies likeMRKH. The mother/daughter physicians have co-authored many publications including chapters on the management of MRKH and the classification of Mullerian Anomalies which are congenital disorders of the reproductive tract. Dr. Stepanian moved to the United States and completed an OB-GYN residency at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine. She then completed the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL/SRS) Fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Thomas Lyons, the pioneer of Laparoscopic Supra- cervical hysterectomy.
Concurrently, Dr. Stepanian pursued additional training in uro-gynecology and pelvic floor reconstruction with Drs. John Miklos and Rob Moore,leaders in pelvic floor reconstruction techniques. She also completed training in Strasbourg, France, with world-renowned Professor Arnaud Wattiez, in thelaparoscopic treatment of endometriosis. In 2001, Dr. Stepanian’s commitment toglobal education on minimally invasive approaches to gynecologic health resulted inher creation of SurgeryU, the first global web-based university for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. Surgery enabled doctors from more than 110 countries to have access to the most up-to-date techniques. Dr. Stepanian has served on numerous committees and boards of international organizations and personally participated in the development of the gynecologic standards of care. In addition to her Atlanta practice in gynecologic health, Dr. Stepanian continues to consult,undertake research, author publications and mentor the next generation of physicians. She travels and teaches extensively, while continuing to serve on International Gynecologic Advisory Boards. In her years in Atlanta, Dr. Stepanian has built a warm, successful practice based on her extensive knowledge and continued study of all techniques related to the full spectrum of women’s gynecologic health and surgery. Her studies, experience and continued involvement in the scientific community assure that her patients receive well-informed care and counsel at all ages and stages of life.
