OVERVIEW
Dr. Sanford received his medical degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Georgetown University in 1980, where he was president of the AOA Honor Medical Society chapter. He served his general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and came to San Diego in 1985. Dr. Sanford was in private practice until recruited by Scripps Clinic Medical Group to be head of the Division of General Surgery in 1990, a position he held through 1998. Dr. Sanford is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. He is past president of both the San Diego Surgical Society and the San Diego Society of General Surgeons. Dr. Sanford has a special interest in thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He also performs a high volume of breast and hernia surgery.
