"I was sent to this dermatology department by my primary physician in Davis and was actually looking forward to speaking with an expert about a skin condition I had developed. I was scheduled with dermatologist expert, Dr. Adam A. Pettey -where even in the consultation room an award of Sacramento's recognized doctors of 2018 was hanging with his name on it. Finally able to speak to someone so knowledgeable about something I was concerned with and dealing with for about 2 years, I was met with the condescending and disregarding nature of Dr. Pettey. Our conversation did not last longer than maybe 5 minutes, but he made me feel stupid about the questions I was asking and made me feel like my recollection about my own symptoms may be invalid. Example: I was diagnosed by him of having work dermatitis (which I'm not convinced of) and I asked "if puss filled bubbles were normal (for the condition)? He makes the remark "well it's not NORMAL" -(he was thinking that I was asking in terms of normal ...
skin attributes) in which I clarified "I meant in terms of the skin condition" to which he replies with "well everyone has a different definition of what they think puss-filled bumps are like" and thus making me feel invalidated about my recollections. I am a senior university student studying to work in the health care field and I get that there won't be an answer for everything and that sometimes there's not much more you can do, but there's something called human compassion, empathy, and kindness (especially about patient's concerns) that Dr. Pettey was severely lacking. I never had any reason to doubt the health care system, but this experience has made me feel more empathy and gave me a better understanding as to why there are so many people out there who distrust physicians and the health care system -aside from making me feel stupid and unheard, at least this medical visit gave me a learning experience and I think that deserves one star. "
