"Very thorough, understanding, competent. Listens. You don't feel rushed. Regardless of what you've read in another rating on this site, I am 100% pleased with Susan Shields as my caregiver. I would definitely recommend Susan Shields to anyone seeking professional, caring medical attention."

"I never leave reviews, but my experience was awful. Robert Ritchey in the same office used to be my PCP, but he didn't listen to me. I switched to Susan Shields, hoping she would be better. She was worse, especially in her bedside manner. The problems started because I had an abnormal lab (high 17-OH) from another doctor that I took to Ritchey for a second opinion. Based on my research, I questioned Ritchey about an ACTH test which is the next course of action for that lab result. He dismissed the idea, suggesting my symptoms were a psychological problem. He treated me as if I'm ignorant after I said I'm autistic (Asperger's). He thought I needed assistance finding the member services phone number on my insurance card - for a therapist - when I could find information about 17-OH and ACTH for our appointment? It was amusing to me, considering I'm a psychology student; I'm familiar with medical literature and research, and my IQ is 140, higher than your average doctor. I was uncomfortable ...
seeing him again. I went to a specialist who listened and ordered the ACTH test. My result was abnormal. More research led to an ACTH stimulation test and a pituitary MRI. Now I know from the radiologist's report that my pituitary gland is abnormally large, either from birth or hyperplasia, which can press on cranial nerves causing headaches and vision loss. Those are issues I have continually suffered from. I think it's worth mentioning that hyperplastic cells can mutate to cancerous cells, forming tumors. That brings me to Susan Shields, who I waited months to see for a physical exam. She was unprofessional and sarcastic from the start when I explained what happened since my visit with Ritchey. "You only saw him (Ritchey) once." How many times are you supposed to see a doctor before they take you seriously? Once was enough. She dismissed my MRI, assuming that I was born with a large pituitary, and she questioned if I've been "looking for something that isn't there." That was incredibly offensive, considering everything I looked for was showing up as abnormal. Had I not "looked for things that aren't there," I would not have all of this new information about my health. How can they say with certainty that 'it' is or isn't there if they're not following protocol, i.e., acknowledging labs and scans and ordering the next test? Why would my pituitary be abnormally large now and not in any of the brain scans I've had before if I was born that way? When I asked her these questions, she was noticeably angry. She wouldn't let me finish my sentences. She repeatedly cut me off while speaking. It is already difficult for me to communicate verbally due to autism, so this was frustrating. She said that she's "just telling me what the report says." The report mentioned hyperplasia, too, but she refused to investigate that. She also antagonized me about not following up with the specialist who ordered the MRI quickly enough when I had it done the same week I saw her. Is she oblivious to the fact that patients are scheduled when the doctor is available? That can take weeks or months, even for a follow-up telehealth appointment, especially if you're waiting to see Susan Shields. I'm sure she is aware of that fact. She just wanted to make me feel bad. I left quietly, but I came home feeling disrespected, powerless, and without answers. We're told to take control over our health and work with our doctors, but my experiences with Ritchey and Shields prove that is a joke. Maybe, they were offended that a young patient, with no medical background, dared to question their knowledge? They should take care. Malpractice lawsuits could be in their futures. Do you want to be blamed, gaslighted, humiliated, and leave the 'doctor's' office feeling worse than when you entered? Go here. Just kidding. You're better off seeing me. Go anywhere else. It's a long wait for a lot of nothing, and you could be growing a tumor in the meantime. I apologize for the long review. I "

Our provider data is sourced from the physicians themselves as well as publicly available databases. Any doctor or provider who claims their profile by verifying themselves can update their information and provide additional data on their specialties, education, accepted insurances, conditions they treat, and procedures they perform.

All the physician and provider reviews on WebMD Care are provided by users just like you. Knowing these reviews provide insight into how other patients feel about a doctor, we maintain internal policies and protocols to ensure the quality and accuracy of all reviews. Providers are not able to remove or modify reviews on their own. Reviews can only be removed after an internal review by our customer service team.
