"I had the highest of hopes for Ms Brown overseeing my now 100 year old mother's care as opposed to an MD. She claimed to be able to do anything an MD could on our first visit, seemed to listen and I liked her, she seemed to get along fine eough with mom, who has dementia and is bedbound. However there are some apparent communication issues that have me questioning if her practice via the UH Housecalls program is the best choice for us, as much as I tried to get someone from that program. Last time she was due I believe we had to reschedule because when she called she got no answer. I presumed when the appointment was made, that was it. But it was her practice to call before coming. My landline phone which is primary is upstairs, and so, in anticipating her arrival, I was not near the phone, I was downstairs awaiting her momentary arrival. When she did not get an answer I think she moved on to her next appt and we had to reschedule. The call last week was from someone in her office. ...
A phone number was left that I tried reaching 3 times. It belonged to a retail store. I played the message back 3 times to verify I had the right number as the person was not the clearest of speakers. WHen I realized who it might be I called after looking up the correct number, and they wanted to set up an appt and did mom want a flu shot? I agreed to the appt day/time which I believed to be today. I knew the visit was for within the 1 PM hour and called to confirm, and remind them of the issue last time, so to say that if there was no answer, there very well may not be, as I would be downstairs waiting for her arrival. I was told the visit was for YESTERDAY and could be rescheduled for the flu shot etc. Being human, being overwhelmed as the solo caregiver for my mother and my 105 year old father, I will admit I could have gotten the dates confused. I would not have made the appt for yesterday or didn't realize it was because I never would have made one for taking my car in for service at the same time. HOWEVER, had Ms Brown shown up she would have found the door open and not only my father home, but our nursing assistant present so she could have come in. Today there was mention again of giving my mother her flu shot which I had made clear she did NOT need. Clearly room for improved communication on both our parts. My voice did raise when the flu vaccine was mentioned again because I had made it so clear in the prior phone call it was NOT needed and the person in Ms Brown's office took offense at my tone. If you are a caregiver you know the pressures and stresses of tending to what seems like hundreds of details. In my life it is not only mom, but we had a pipe break so I am dealing with contractors, asbestos remediation, floor issues, and then a major car issue. The lack of empathy for a family caregiver by the person on the phone at least did not sit well with me. This practice may not be the best match for us. It shouldn't have to be this much of a challenge, and staff should be far more attentive to detail. And clearly I need to be more attentive to immediately writing down appts on the calendar. "
